Abstract

This international workshop is the first workshop planned within the BMBF/MSRT-funded mobility project FORZA. The Reconstruction of FORest decline processes in the ZAgros forests of Western Iran using remote sensing and dendrochronology (FORZA) project aims to consolidate and deepen existing collaborations between the K.N.Toosi University of Technology, Faculty of Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Institute of Geography and Geo-ecology  in the field of forest research, remote sensing and sustainable management of forest resources in order to establish a long-term research cooperation. The thematic focus is on forest damage processes in the oak forests of western Iran, known as Zagros forests. The important technical objectives of FORZA are the joint research and the exchange of scientists and students. In addition, FORZA aims to expand the scientific network on forest and environmental research in Iran and Germany. The aim is to complement the existing expertise in the field of remote sensing with additional expertise in the fields of ecology and forest biometry.

Within the planned two-day workshop, the aim is to

  • exchange knowledge via multiple presentations at the interface between forest ecology and remote sensing, and
  • development of project ideas for future multi-lateral cooperation based on structured brainstorming sessions.

The thematically-relevant German experts include renown scientists from KIT, Technische Universität München, University of Regensburg, whereas the Iranian experts are from K.N.Toosi University of Technology, University of Tehran, University of Kurdistan, Razi University of Kermanshah, Research Institute of Forests and Rangelands and the Forests (RIFR), Rangelands and Watershed Management Organization of Iran (FRWO), building a mosaic of experts and opinion from both science and practical sectors. The detailed program consisting of plenary sessions and brainstorming sessions are as following.
